The CD I am talking about is a very rare one and I love that game. Therefore, I do not want to use original CD in order to preserve it for sentimental reasons. However, I do want to play the game that is why I want to back up the CD. Is there any legal way to do so? I have tried conventional software to copy it but it is copy protected.

Superdork has one way but there is a better way although it is not always possible. If you use a NoCD patch/crack then you have to store a copy of the original .exe file otherwise you have to reinstall the game if you want to install a patch. The method I use for at LANs so I dont have to cart all my CDs along is I use a mini ISO which I load into a virtual drive. This means that I dont have to mess with the game files and can install patches if one comes out. A mini ISO is a modified ISO (disk image) that contains only the data that the game requires to run from the CD. These are usualy hard to find and I dont know how to make them myself. If you do manage to find one use a program called Daemon tools which will alow you to load the ISO into a virtual drive and run the game without risking damaging the disk

The best and most reliable programs are DAEMON TOOLS, and ALCOHOL 120%. Daemon is geared more toward game backups.. Both progs. will let you create "virtual Cd's", which you can load with a CD image. Daemon also includes all the latest copy protection hacks (safedisk, securelock, etc.) Once you have a working image, you can burn it and it will work, unlike some other programs like "gamedrive".

Legally, you're not supposed to make a back-up copy of any games, even if you own the game.

So, with that in mind, what you can do is use a no-CD program if you want to prevent your CD from getting scratches. Instead of using the drive to read your CD, you use the hard drive to trick the computer into thinking that the drive has the disk in it.
